Traditional Occupations of Goa – Original Watercolour Paintings

Started in 2020, our Traditional Occupations of Goa series documents the people and livelihoods that once formed an inseparable part of everyday Goan life.

From the padekar climbing coconut trees and the nustekann selling fresh fish, to farmers working in the fields and the poder delivering bread on his bicycle, each painting captures an occupation closely connected to Goa’s villages, neighbourhoods and daily routines.

Some of these occupations have already become rare, while many others may gradually disappear in the years ahead. Through this series, we hope to preserve their stories through art and remember the people whose skills, hard work and familiar calls became part of Goa’s identity.

Each artwork is an original hand-painted watercolour by Professor Raj Halankar, a veteran Mumbai-based Goan artist and former professor at the Sir J.J. School of Applied Art.
